Gennette is best known for leading Macy’s, Inc. as Chief Executive Officer from March 2017 to February 2024 and as Chairman from February 2018 to April 2024 , following a career that began in 1983 as an executive trainee at Macy’s West in San Francisco .
At Macy’s , he held roles including President, Chief Merchandising Officer and multiple leadership positions across merchandising and store operations, overseeing the retailer’s shift toward omnichannel integration and data-driven merchandising.
